The well-integrated support is no surprise considering that FF XIV is also a console MMORPG. Its revered sibling, Final Fantasy XI, comes with native controller support as well. So, if you ever decide to drop the mouse and keyboard in favor of a gamepad, rest assured as these two Final Fantasy MMOs work smoothly with such a peripheral.

World of Warcraft

Before October 2020, gamepad configuration was unofficially available thanks to third-party software, such as the ConsolePort addon. Blizzard Entertainment sneaked in native controller support with the Shadowlands pre-patch giving players the chance to hook up a gamepad of choice and have more excuses for standing in the fire.

Joke aside, WoW works pretty well with a controller. Character movement and camera controls feel fluid. You will have no issues getting around. Setting up the binds for combat takes a bit of time. A class-specific guide is recommended. You might want to get comfortable with the spells and abilities before jumping into any kind of group content with pugs.

Black Desert Online

• For Fans of Korean MMOs

We are happy to report that Black Desert Online is among the MMORPGs with built-in controller support. The option to enable the controller, aptly named Gamepad, is under the Interface Setting menu. In the Action Hotkeys menu, you can set up the buttons for actions. However, many players recommend the reWASD mapper for advanced customization.

Playing BDO on a competitive level with a gamepad is not for everyone. It can take time and practice to find and master a comfortable configuration. The experience heavily depends on the class you play.

Elder Scrolls Online

The controller support in ESO is quite robust, making it a viable option for those who’d rather play with a gamepad than a keyboard and mouse. However, don’t toss the old kbm aside because most Elder Scrolls Online addons don’t work with a gamepad.

Navigating the menus is another action for which you’ll want the designated PC gaming peripherals. You will also need them for typing. Most of the players only use the gamepad for combat. The mapping depends on your preferences and whatever you find easier. Play around with the options and check out community guides for tips!

Lost Ark

The popular MMO ARPG from Smilegate doesn’t leave gamepad fans stranded. It supports both PlayStation and Xbox controllers. If plug-and-play doesn’t work, you need to go into the Settings menu and enable the Use Gamepad option. The in-game Control menu allows you to map the buttons. For menu navigation, you will feel more at ease with a mouse and keyboard.

As for combat, the auto-targeting option is your friend when playing a ranged class. On the other hand, auto-targeting can be bothersome for close-quarters encounters. The only way to find out if playing Lost Ark with a controller is for you is to give it a try.

Destiny 2

It would be a bit weird for a game that was first released on consoles not to have controller support on PC, right? Connect your controller of choice to the PC and the game should automatically detect and allow you to use it. The controller settings within the game’s options menu allow you to fine-tune the experience. 

Keep in mind that some activities, such as competitive multiplayer or high-level raids, still heavily favor mouse and keyboard controls due to the precision and speed advantages they offer. However, Destiny 2 offers a fair controller experience for players who prefer this input method. 

DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online offers a unique blend of immersive storytelling and exciting gameplay. You have the chance to become a legendary superhero or villain within the DC Comics universe. Unless you are using a controller. DCUO has gamepad support, but don’t count on being as fast and precise as with a mouse.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to individual taste. Some have no problem engaging in thrilling combat armed with their controller of choice, while others swear by the mouse and keyboard. 

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

The PC version of The Division 2 fully supports the DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2, and Xbox Wireless controllers. The question is: are gamepad users at a disadvantage? We all know that shooters and controllers aren’t the bestest of friends.

For relaxed PvE, go ahead and hook up your gamepad and you will feel – for the most part at least – no difference. For competitive content – where precise aiming and quick interactions are crucial – nothing can beat the mouse and keyboard. Consider switching to the console version if you want to be on a level ground with your pad pals in PvP.

Bless Unleashed

While the game supports most types of controllers, the UI displays the Xbox controls even when using a PlayStation controller. For some, that is a deal breaker. If you can get over it, you will find that Bless Online has good support for this input method.

Bless Unleashed features fast-paced engaging action combat that feels fluid and natural when playing with a controller. If in other MMOs, controllers hinder your movement and actions, in Bless Unleashed, you will find the opposite to be true. Too bad that the game doesn’t get much attention from the developers.

Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis

Phantasy Star Online 2 and its New Genesis iteration are two MMOs that come with native controller support. What you need to know is that you will lose some convenience when playing with a gamepad. For example, the camera movement isn’t as precise as when using the mouse.

The newer PSO2NG provides a better experience. Even if you decide to use a controller, you will still want to keep the keyboard around for typing and the mouse for browsing the menus and settings.

Star Trek Online

Can you play Star Trek Online with a controller? Yes. Should you play Star Trek Online? Only if you truly want to go where (almost) no player has gone before. Being a console game, you’d think STO has all that fancy controller support. Sadly, that is not the case. However, fret not as you can still make your favorite space MMO work with a gamepad. A quick search will yield an excellent community-made guide detailing all you need to know.

The following MMORPGs don’t integrate support for controllers, but we all know that gamers are nothing if not resourceful. With a bit of research and a few tweaks here and there, you can play these MMOs with a controller.

Guild Wars 2

The developers have stated that controller integration is not in the plans, but that’s merely a setback. Guild Wars 2 is the game with the best unofficial controller support. The community went to great lengths to be able to play this MMO with a gamepad. You will find no shortage of guides.

Star Wars The Old Republic

For raiding and PvP, SWTOR is designed to be played exclusively with a mouse and keyboard. However, story campaigns and leisure activities are perfectly doable with a controller.

It’s funny that a game that has been on consoles for ages doesn’t have native controller support on PC. Nevertheless, there are a few good emulators and mappers that will allow you to adventure into the Forgotten Realms sans mouse and keyboard.

Dungeons and Dragons Online

Playing Lord of the Rings Online with a gamepad is viable depending on the content. You may underperform in raids and have your behind handed to you in PvP. For all those other times when you want to chill – LOTRO is a great casual MMO – and do things at your own pace, the controller offers a smooth experience.

In the realm of MMORPGs, Age of Conan once held a place of reverence and distinction. An ambitious project inspired by the dark, mature world of Robert E. Howard’s “Conan the Barbarian”, the game aimed to set itself apart from the more high-fantasy and family-friendly titles in the genre.

It attracted millions of players with its engaging combat system, stunning graphics for its time, and rich lore. However, as the years passed, Age of Conan seemed to lose its sheen, with a dwindling player base, rare updates, and an apparent neglect from its developers.

In today’s gaming landscape, filled with a plethora of choice and modernized experiences, an important question arises: Is Age of Conan worth playing in 2024? Let’s find out!

Gameplay

A MMORPG is only as engaging as its gameplay and Age of Conan once had plenty to offer in this department. Centered around the brutal, visceral world of Conan the Barbarian, Age of Conan sought to differentiate itself from its competition with a combat system that was both engaging and complex.

At the core of Age of Conan’s gameplay is its real-time combat system. Unlike the traditional click-and-wait combat of many MMOs, Age of Conan requires active participation from the player. With each left or right mouse click, your character swings their weapon, while different combinations result in various attack patterns and abilities. This dynamic and interactive combat was a breath of fresh air at launch and even today remains one of the standout features of the game.

The game also offers a range of unique classes divided among four archetypes: Soldier, Priest, Mage, and Rogue. Each class has its unique playstyle and mechanics, providing a variety of combat experiences. The spellcasting, in particular, is notable for its complexity and versatility. Yet, with the lack of updates and new content, class balance and progression feel somewhat stale, affecting the overall gameplay experience.

The world of Age of Conan is vast, teeming with mysteries, and a plethora of quests that plunge you into the lore of Hyboria. However, the game has always had an issue with content distribution. The majority of its compelling content is packed into the early levels. The game’s Tortage, the starting area, is a highly praised and richly detailed beginner’s zone filled with numerous quests and a unique night/day system. However, once players leave this area, they are often disappointed by the noticeable drop in the quality and quantity of content.

Player versus Player (PvP) combat in Age of Conan is a mixed bag. While the siege warfare, where guilds can battle for control over battle keeps, brings a thrilling strategic component to the game, the overall PvP experience can feel unbalanced and chaotic, favoring certain classes over others. The lack of consistent updates and improvements to this mode have left it feeling stagnant and, at times, frustrating.

Crafting in Age of Conan is a deep system that allows players to create a range of items, from weapons and armor to potions and more. However, it is also quite complex and time-consuming, requiring a significant investment of time and resources to truly excel.

Overall, the gameplay in Age of Conan is a mixture of highs and lows. Its engaging combat system and deep crafting are countered by an uneven content distribution and a neglected PvP system. These elements, combined with the lack of updates, contribute to a gameplay experience that, while unique, is not as polished or engaging as it could be.

Graphics

At its 2008 launch, Age of Conan stood out for its mature-themed aesthetics and graphics quality that pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the MMORPG genre. The world of Hyboria was beautifully realized with rich, detailed environments and character models that exhibited a level of detail and realism few other games could match at the time. Age of Conan’s graphics engine was capable of rendering stunning vistas, atmospheric cities, and brutal combat scenes, all contributing to the gritty and visceral world of Conan the Barbarian.

Fast forward to 2023, and it’s clear that Age of Conan’s visuals have aged. While the graphics were impressive for their time, in comparison to newer MMORPGs, Age of Conan’s visuals fall short. The level of detail in character models and environments is noticeably lower than in more modern titles, and the lack of updates to the graphics engine over the years is apparent.

Textures can often appear blurry or low resolution, especially in larger environments. Character models, while still detailed, lack the depth and nuance found in more recent games. Animation quality also varies, with some movements appearing smooth and natural, while others can feel stiff and dated.

Despite these flaws, Age of Conan still retains a certain charm in its visuals. The game’s design choices, from the architecture of its cities to the designs of its creatures, still shine through, contributing to a game world that is both atmospheric and engaging. The day-night cycle and weather effects add an extra layer of immersion, making Hyboria feel like a living, breathing world.

Furthermore, Age of Conan’s art direction adheres to the dark, brutal aesthetic of Robert E. Howard’s original stories, which is a significant part of its appeal. The game doesn’t shy away from portraying the bloody, grim nature of Conan’s world, a theme that remains consistent in its visuals.

Community & Population

Age of Conan once boasted a healthy population of players, with bustling cities and active guilds. However, as the years have passed, the population has dwindled significantly. The game now has a markedly low population, making it challenging to find groups for dungeons, participate in PvP, or engage with the community.

Despite the low population, there is still a handful of dedicated players who maintain a tight-knit community. These veterans can often be helpful to new players, providing advice and guidance. Unfortunately, this also means that the community can seem insular and unwelcoming to newcomers.

Is It Free-to-Play or Pay-To-Win?

Age of Conan offers a free-to-play model with the option for a premium subscription. While you can enjoy most of the game’s content without spending a dime, the free-to-play experience feels limited.

In terms of pay-to-win elements, Age of Conan is relatively fair. Premium players do get a few advantages, like faster leveling, but they do not have a substantial edge in PvP or endgame content. Still, the free-to-play restrictions can make the game feel pay-to-play rather than genuinely free.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen is in a league of its own. The official 2012 reveal date marked the debut of the Kickstarter campaign, however, pre-production began in 2010 and production kicked off one year later.

The game has been in the works for more than ten years! As you can imagine, it has attracted unparalleled criticism. With over $400 million from the backers, it holds a record for the most-crowdfunded video game.

Many are wondering if the space sim MMO and its Squadron 42 single-player campaign offshoot are ever coming out. Rumor has it that the people in charge have realized they cannot deliver on the initial promise, but canceling would spell disaster and potential lawsuits, so they are leading the backers on for as long as possible.

Aion 2

• Revealed In: November 2018.
• Current Status: In Development.

In 2018, NCSoft announced an Aion sequel as a mobile MMORPG. In 2022, at a shareholders meeting, a bit of info on Aion 2 surfaced.

The team is using Unreal Engine 5 to build the game which will also be available on PC. A global launch frame is yet to be revealed.

The Aion 2 website, albeit with no relevant info, has been up and running for a while. We have a generic trailer and a couple of screenshots.

Fans’ concern is that Aion 2 will be a cash-grabbing gacha game. If we cannot optimistically look to the future, at least we can nostalgically look back now that Aion Classic is available.

Valiance Online

• Revealed In: 2014.
• Current Status: Playable Alpha.

Valiance Online is one of the superhero MMOs that gained track following the closure of the beloved City of Heroes MMORPG.

The last update was in mid-2022 when a forum post from the devs revealed that the first investor milestone was achieved. The team used the money to create a “solid foundation”. And that was the last time we heard from the game officials.

Valiance Online takes place in San Cielo, the city formerly known as San Diego. It features ten character Archetypes.

Curious supporters can gain alpha access via donations starting from $25. However, considering the official radio silence, checking up a gameplay video is a more reasonable alternative at this point.

Ship of Heroes

• Revealed In: 2016.
• Current Status: Playable Beta aiming for a 2023 release.

Ship of Heroes is one of the MMOs on this list that might see the light of release in 2023. After not delivering on the 2021 and 2022 launch promises, the developers are quite hopeful for 2023. Also, we count Ship of Heroes’ 2023 Steam listing as one step closer to release.

A “mix between City of Heroes and Star Trek”, this MMO aims to revive the superhero genre. Reports from those that gave it a try show that the indie developer Heroic Games Corporation has done a good job so far. Fingers crossed for a forthcoming release!

City of Titans

• Revealed In: 2013.
• Current Status: Playable Alpha.

Not another City of Heroes spiritual successor! That’s the last one, we promise!

City of Titans is closing in on a decade of being under construction and we fear many moons will still pass until the game reaches 100% completion.

Back in November 2022, the development team decided to switch from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. They admitted that it slowed the development, but solved several major issues.

Other than that, the development blogs are keeping us posted with various updates. We can see that City of Titans has not been abandoned, but will the fans’ patience outlast the development cycle?

Camelot Unchained

• Revealed In: 2013.
• Current Status: Beta.

From City State Entertainment, a studio led by Dark Age of Camelot’s designer Mark Jacobs, comes a PvP-based MMORPG centering on a three-faction conflict.

Camelot Unchained entered Beta in 2018 and it has been stuck in there ever since.

In 2020, the studio revealed that they are working on a second game Final Stand: Ragnarok which was released in early access in 2021 and it has been stuck in there ever since.

What’s worse than an unfinished game? Two unfinished games! Some backers requested a refund. In recent news, City State Entertainment revealed they are expanding the team to go forward with the development.

In 2022, the studio received a whopping $15 million from investors. That should be enough, right?

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen

• Revealed In: January 2014.
• Current Status: Pre-Alpha.

Pantheon ROTF is a fantasy MMORPG with an emphasis on teamwork and challenging PvE. Nine races and 12 classes allow players to create all sorts of characters.

Gameplay videos revealed a massive potential, but the development pace is worrisome, to say the least. However, the developers have been more transparent in the last few years. The community still has faith in Brad McQuaid’s brainchild.

In 2022, it was revealed that Pantheon received $2.4 million from private investors. If you want to see how the game is coming along, founders’ packs that include access to closed testing sessions are available.

Ashes of Creation

• Revealed In: 2016.
• Current Status: Alpha.

Ashes of Creation is one of those Kickstarted MMOs we are rightfully entitled to complain about. The game met the $750,000 goal in less than half a day. It raised a bit over $3.5 million from early backers.

In 2021, those who pre-ordered the $500 version had the chance to take part in the first alpha test. The second one is yet to come.

In its long development cycle, the game has transitioned from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5.

Ashes of Creation features a dynamic open world that reacts to players’ actions. Let’s hope the developers react to the community’s demands and finish the game in the foreseeable future.

Project Gorgon

• Revealed In: 2016.
• Current Status: Early Access.

Project Gorgon is a niche sandbox indie game that sends players on possibly the wildest ride of their MMORPG experience. It’s eccentric but undeniably fun for those who have the equanimity to discover it. If you love old-school MMOs, this one should make your list.

Project Gorgon has been in early access since 2018. However, that doesn’t seem to bother the community as the regular updates keep players happy and engaged.

The husband and wife duo leading the development have worked on Star Trek Online, Asheron’s Call, and EverQuest II.

Dark and Light

• Revealed In: 2016.
• Current Status: Abandoned in Early Access.

In 2008, Snail Games acquired the Dark and Light rights. Ironically, the new game would suffer the same fate. One year after the 2016 reveal, Dark and Light from Snail Games was available on Steam as an Early Access title.

In the first years, players’ reports have been favorable citing great potential for this survival MMORPG. To everyone’s surprise, Snail Games abandoned Dark and Light in Early Access without a word.

You can still buy it, but beware as the last update is from 2020.

No official news to seal the fate came to light. The game periodically goes on sale for less than $10. Is Snail Games quietly and shamelessly still cashing in on this abandonware?

Chronicles/Kingdoms of Elyria

In June 2016, Soulbound Studios raised $1.3 million through a Kickstarter campaign for an innovative and dynamic MMORPG.

Over the following years, the studio received an additional $7 million from backers. To everyone’s surprise, in 2020, CEO Jeromy Walsh announced the development will stop due to the lack of funds.

The rightfully-angry mob of backers filed for a class-action lawsuit which was eventually dismissed. Meanwhile, the company took back the announcement and stated that the Chronicles of Elyria development continues but with a smaller team.

They also revealed Kingdoms of Elyria, a spinoff strategy colony-building simulation that will be available for backers as a free game.

Kingdoms of Elyria is developed in parallel with Chronicles of Elyria. It eyes a 2023 release, but no one believes it.

Codename Reality

• Current Status: In development.

If you’ve been casually scrolling this list hoping to discover one title you haven’t heard about, there you have it! Codename Reality’s 2018 Kickstarter campaign was a flop. However, that was merely a setback for the Netherlands-based indie studio, Orode Productions.

Over the last few years, they have stoically pushed through to achieve the world’s first MMOPEG, massively multiplayer online persistent entity game.

Codename Reality features a fantasy world that players change with their actions. The game is in the works with no release date in sight.

From time to time, interested people have the chance to join the closed testing sessions.

In 2015, Asylum Entertainment boasted about redefining MMOs with a groundbreaking title that would do away with the linear gameplay that has become a staple of the genre.

A successful Kickstarter campaign followed allowing the team to secure more money than they’d hoped for in the first place. In November 2018, Identity launched on Steam in Early Access.

The Negative reviews accuse the developers of not keeping their promise and abandoning the game. In August 2022, we were treated to what appeared to be a heartfelt message saying the studio is in financial trouble and no one should buy the game – which was to be taken off Steam in the near future – until an update is available. We are still waiting for that update.

Reign of Guilds

Reign of Guilds is a hardcore PvP MMORPG set in the Middle Ages. It has uncommon MMO features such as first-person perspective and friendly fire.

The development is moving on slowly, but it’s moving. However, those who participated in play tests aren’t too confident about its future. The development still has a long way to go.

There’s also the matter of the game’s design that favors PvP. A part of the community believes that, if done right, Reign of Chaos could find its niche, but a big if looms over it.
